About Kellerwald-Edersee National Park

Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is located in the federal state of Hesse (Hessen), Germany, covering approximately 57 square kilometers around the Edersee reservoir. Established in 2004, it protects one of the largest and best-preserved beech forest areas in Central Europe, forming part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe. The park's landscape is marked by dense, native beech woods, rolling hills, and the expansive Edersee lake, creating a varied habitat for a rich array of flora and fauna. Visitors can explore pristine deciduous forest environments that feature species such as wildcat, red deer, and rare birds including black stork and peregrine falcon. The park has globally significant biodiversity, particularly for its rare beetles and fungi dependent on deadwood. Recreation here emphasizes low-impact activities like hiking, guided nature tours, and wildlife observation. Several well-maintained trail systems wind through the old-growth forest and offer scenic overlooks of the reservoir. The National Park Center Kellerwald provides interactive exhibitions on natural history and conservation efforts. Seasonal highlights include vibrant autumn colors and springtime wildflowers. Its tranquil ambiance and dark skies make Kellerwald-Edersee a favored destination for nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking an authentic European forest experience.
